Providence Moves Indoors in November, and the Handoff Happens on One Saturday

October 22, 2026

When does Providence's outdoor season actually end? On the 2026 calendar it ends on a specific Saturday. On Nov. 7, Farm Fresh Rhode Island opens its winter market at 10 Sims Ave at 9 a.m. That afternoon, WaterFire sets up for its last full lighting of the year. At 7:30 p.m., Trinity Rep's 50th-anniversary A Christmas Carol plays its third preview at the Dowling Theater.

These three organizations work separately, but their schedules meet in the same seven days, from Nov. 5 to Nov. 11. Nov. 7 is the only date when you can do the riverfront and the indoor version of the city in a single day.

Tonight on the Bridge, and the Countdown From Here

The run-up starts this evening. WaterFire's Starts at Sunset gathering, supported by the Providence Tourism Council, puts five braziers on the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge at 365 S. Water Street tonight, Thursday, Oct. 29, from 5:45 to 8 p.m. WaterFire describes it as a community gathering where artists and onlookers meet on the pedestrian bridge at sunset, a smaller format than a full lighting.

From here the calendar tightens quickly:

Date What changes Where
Thu., Oct. 29 Starts at Sunset, 5:45 to 8 p.m. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge
Thu., Nov. 5 A Christmas Carol previews begin Dowling Theater, Trinity Rep
Sat., Nov. 7 Winter market opens, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. 10 Sims Ave
Sat., Nov. 7 14th Annual Salute to Veterans, last full lighting of 2026 WaterPlace Park and the rivers
Wed., Nov. 11 Partial lighting, 12 braziers Memorial Park
Wed., Nov. 11 A Christmas Carol opening night, 7:30 p.m. Dowling Theater
Late November Ice season begins Providence Rink, 2 Kennedy Plaza
Fri., Nov. 27 Holiday Lights Spectacular opens Roger Williams Park Zoo

Between Nov. 5 and Nov. 11, WaterFire goes from a full river lighting to a dozen braziers in one park. The winter market goes from closed to open for a season that runs through April 24, 2027. Trinity Rep goes from first preview to opening night. All three pivots land inside the first full week of November.

Saturday, November 7, in Order

The events on Nov. 7 are spread across three parts of the city. The market and the riverfront fit together with time to spare. The only overlap is in the evening, when you'll have to choose between the theater and the river.

  1. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., 10 Sims Ave. The Providence Winter Farmers Market opens at Farm Fresh RI's headquarters. Farm Fresh calls it the largest indoor farmers market in New England, and it runs every Saturday through April 24, 2027. Pets aren't allowed inside under Health Department rules, so plan the dog walk for another time.
  2. 3:30 p.m., WaterPlace Park. Onshore programming and vendors open for the 14th Annual Salute to Veterans, the final full lighting of WaterFire's 2026 season.
  3. 4:32 p.m., sunset. WaterFire lists sunset as the start of the lighting. 150 Veterans carrying torches process into the WaterPlace Park Basin and form a Ring of Fire as the braziers are lit.
  4. 7:30 p.m., Dowling Theater. Trinity Rep's A Christmas Carol plays a preview performance.
  5. Until 10 p.m. The fires on the river keep burning, so if you skip the theater, you still have hours of lighting after dark.

The early sunset changes this lighting. With sunset listed at 4:32 p.m., the ceremony starts around the time a summer lighting would still be setting up. In 2026 WaterFire also marked its 500th lighting, at the May 30 event supported by RISD, with 500 milestone torchbearers. Nov. 7 is the last full lighting of that same season.

The ceremony also takes part of its cast from the community. WaterFire invites Veterans and active-duty service members to sign up as torchbearers, and Veterans who need mobility assistance can take stationary positions, holding a torch without walking in the procession.

What the Winter Market Means for Your Saturday Mornings

Of everything that starts that week, the market changes the most weekends. It runs from Nov. 7, 2026 to April 24, 2027, on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. That makes it a standing weekly stop for close to six months, well beyond anything else on this list.

Farm Fresh says vendors rotate each week and the lineup changes each season, so the 2026-27 roster will look different. For a sense of range, last season's list included Narragansett Creamery, Mei Mei Dumplings, Little Room Mushrooms, Hawt Chocolate, Boston Smoked Fish Co., Barden Family Orchard and Slowhand Sharpening, a knife sharpener.

The site also takes your compost. Farm Fresh offers free residential food-scrap drop-off in bins near the loading docks at the back of the parking lot, picked up by ReMix Organics. On market Saturdays the bins are moved toward the building entrance between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Bring a week of scraps along with your shopping bag. Check the posted guidelines first, because Farm Fresh warns that even one produce sticker can ruin a whole batch.

Trinity Rep Fills the Rest of the Week

A Christmas Carol turns 50 at Trinity Rep this year. The anniversary production is directed and choreographed by company member Taavon Gamble, and Trinity Rep notes that it reimagines the story each year. The run goes from Nov. 5 through Dec. 31, 2026, at the Dowling Theater.

Previews run Nov. 5 through Nov. 10, with a noon matinee on Sunday, Nov. 8. Trinity Rep made a limited number of Pay What You Wish tickets for the Nov. 5 and Nov. 10 performances available starting Oct. 22 at noon. Those are the cheapest ways into the 50th season if any are left.

Two dates after opening night are worth a look:

  • Noche Familia, Friday, Nov. 13. A family-friendly evening celebrating southern New England's Latino diaspora. It's open to everyone, with Pay What You Wish tickets starting at $25 for adults and $15 for children. The play is performed in English, and a limited number of seats offer live Spanish captioning.
  • Sensory-Friendly Plus!, Saturday, Nov. 21 at noon. Sound and lighting are adjusted, and audience members can make noise and come and go as they need to.

November 11 Closes the Week

The week ends on Wednesday, Nov. 11, with WaterFire and Trinity Rep both scheduled that evening. WaterFire's partial lighting moves to Memorial Park. WaterFire boats light 12 braziers at 6:30 p.m., and they burn until 8:30. The lighting is supported by BlazerWorks and VocoVision with ARIASE and CASE, to mark the CASE 2026 Convention, which brings special education leaders to Providence from Nov. 11 to 13. It's open to the public.

A few blocks away, A Christmas Carol has its official opening night at 7:30 p.m.

Compare the two WaterFire events in that week. Nov. 7 is a full lighting with programming starting at 3:30 p.m. and fires until 10 p.m. Four days later the river gets 12 braziers for two hours. After Nov. 11, WaterFire's 2026 schedule lists only the Dec. 11 Holiday Basin Lighting and a Dec. 31 Starts at Sunset on the pedestrian bridge.

After the Handoff, the City Runs on Indoor Hours and Lights

With the changeover done, the rest of November follows the cold-weather calendar.

The Providence Rink at 2 Kennedy Plaza opens for its season in late November and stays open into early March, according to the City of Providence Parks Department. No exact 2026 opening date has been posted. Once the season starts, the rink's published public skating hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, weather permitting, with changes for special events and holidays.

On Friday, Nov. 27, Roger Williams Park Zoo opens its Holiday Lights Spectacular, presented by Rhode Island Energy. It covers 40 acres with more than 3.5 million lights and runs through Jan. 3, 2027. For anyone who used WaterFire as their reason to be outside after dark, the zoo is the main evening outing from late November on.

The table above tells you when to go to which place. Before Nov. 7, the evenings belong to the river. From Nov. 7 to April 24, Saturday mornings have a standing stop on Sims Avenue. From late November, the outdoor options are the rink at Kennedy Plaza and the zoo's lights in Roger Williams Park. If you want to see both versions of the city before the outdoor one closes, go on Nov. 7: the market in the morning, the Ring of Fire at sunset and the curtain at 7:30.
